SMOKE (2018) Find A Light
Non inganni l’abbrivio hard rock dell’ultimo album della band
georgiana capitanata dal chitarrista e vocalist Charlie Starr: il
loro è sempre un blend esplosivo di southern rock, outlaw
country, honky tonk, gospel e R&B. A mio avviso il
miglior mix di Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws
e The Marshall Tucker Band in circolazione. “Blackberry
Smoke sound like veterans in the best possible sense, […] evoking
the past without being beholden to it. The result is a splendid
little record that simultaneously feels brand new and like a lost
gem” (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music). Come da tradizione
southern rock la band supporta la pubblicazione di ogni nuovo album
con un’incessante (200 date l’anno) attività live, che toccherà
quest’anno anche l’Italia (unica data all’Alcatraz di Milano il
18 ottobre). A buon intenditor…

RATELIFF & The Night Sweats (2018) Tearing At The Seams
La svolta della carriera musicale per Nathaniel Rateliff da Denver,
Colorado, è giunta nel 2013, quando da singer-songwriter alla James
Taylor si è trasformato in soul singer alla Otis
Redding, si è dotato di una sezione fiati coi fiocchi ed ha scritto
ed interpretato canzoni tra Blues Brothers, Otis Redding
ed il Van Morrison “americano” dei ’70. Il
successivo exploit al botteghino e di critica è del tutto
meritato, e l’impressione del convincente, attuale Tearing At
The Seams è che il nostro dal piedestallo non scenderà
facilmente, perché ha qualità da vendere. Musica americana fino al
midollo, R&B Stax-style ma che ha radici anche bianche: un nuovo
tradizionalista di spessore, per musica ed ascoltatori evergreen.
