Top 'ol55 - Le classifiche del 2023: presentazione.

Al momento delle classifiche di fine anno si arriva sempre un pò impreparati, consapevoli di non avere ascoltato abbastanza, un pò per ovvia mancanza di tempo ma spesso anche per mancanza di energie e per pigrizia (vedasi il ritardo epico di queste classifiche, anche se a parziale discolpa mi ero ripromesso di terminare tutti gli album del 2023 che avevo ancora da ascoltare). Musicalmente parlando il 2023 è stato un buon anno ("a year of little miracles" come dice Mojo), particolarmente illuminato da lavori di grande spessore da parte dei soliti "grandi vecchi" (Peter Gabriel, Pretenders, Ben Folds, Iggy Pop, Blur, Rolling Stones) ma anche da quei più giovani che ci hanno abituato a dischi di grande ispirazione (Gaz Coombes, Noah Gundersen, Dylan Le Blanc, Margo Price, Matt Andersen). Le liste dei vari co-blogger presentano un podio differente l'uno dall'altra e, sebbene i titoli ricorrenti non manchino, il loro ordine è spesso ben diverso, figlio di un'epoca dominata dallo streaming, il cui tempo di ascolto non è mai adeguato a quanto ci sarebbe bisogno. In altri tempi il disco di PG, per quanto mi compete, l'avrei devastato a forza di ascolti: ora passa un pò via assieme agli altri. Procediamo con le varie classifiche (da domani): long life RnR!

CONSIGLI PER CONCLUDERE AL MEGLIO IL 2023

Dopo le schede dedicate al primo semestre, eccoci tra le brume invernali e voilà le mie personalissime preferenze tra gli album pubblicati nel 2023 e da me ascoltati nella seconda parte dell'anno, per affrontare al meglio i bagordi natalizi. Segnalo solo i dischi che per me hanno meritato almeno le 4 stelle (8/10): pur senza capolavori, il 2023 si sta chiudendo con molti ottimi lavori. Quindi "keep on rockin' in a free world!" (Nello il Giovane)

CONSIGLI PER L'ESTATE 2023

La pensione impigrisce? In realtà il tempo diventa ancora più prezioso, perchè impiegato solo in attività piacevoli, e così mentre il tempo libero dedicato alla musica si è ampliato, si è ristretto quello preposto a scriverne... Dopo tanti mesi senza battere un colpo sul nostro blog, le ultime due recensioni di Luca mi hanno fatto sentire un po' in colpa. E così vi propongo, pari-pari a come le scrivo per me (esercizio consigliato dai neurologi per contrastare la possibile demenza senile), almeno le sintetiche schede che dedico con regolarità ai dischi ascoltati. Mi limito ovviamente a segnalare solo gli album pubblicati nel 2023 che, a mio modesto giudizio, hanno meritato un voto uguale o superiore a 8/10 (le 4 stelle di Luca). Continuo ad essere un'idrovora musicale, quindi di generi e stili ce n'è per tutti i gusti: ognuno scelga il suo a seconda dello stato d'animo del momento. I seguenti sono solo alcuni personalissimi suggerimenti per affrontare carichi di good vibrations l'imminente scoppio dell'estate!

Recensione: NATALIE MERCHANT - KEEP YOUR COURAGE (2023)

L’ex frontwoman dei 10.000 Maniacs, gruppo pop-rock degli anni '80 e ’90, è al suo nono lavoro in assoluto ma al primo disco di materiale completamente nuovo in 10 anni. In questi anni, dopo avere risolto un grave problema di salute per un intervento alla colonna vertebrale, in realtà non è mai stata ferma: ha rivisto il suo catalogo precedente con archi e arrangiamenti acustici come parte dell'album Paradise Is There, ha prodotto un documentario ispirato al suo LP multiplatino del 1995 Tigerlily, e ha curato un cofanetto che ne abbraccia la carriera. Sul fronte dell'impegno civico, ha trascorso due anni insegnando musica a bambini in età prescolare a Troy, New York, ed è stata recentemente nominata nel consiglio di amministrazione dell'American Folklife Center presso la Library of Congress. 

La definizione più semplice per questo ultimo lavoro è "chamber pop", pop orchestrale. Gli arrangiamenti e l'orchestrazione sono infatti maestosi, cinematografici, tendenti al classico nella composizione e nella strumentazione. Ma la definizione è comunque riduttiva per un’artista con un enorme senso della melodia e con una delle voci più espressive che si possano mai sentire. Il lavoro infatti integra elementi orchestrali in brani in cui si sente l'amore per il folk in brani come "Guardian angel" e "Eye of the storm” o sfacciatamente pop come “Come on, Aphrodite” .

Il peso del tempo non ha smorzato le grandi qualità di Merchant, anche se i suoi capelli ora sono una corona di trecce d'argento che le scendono ben oltre le spalle.
